Nairobi residents could soon face arrest and hefty fines for littering in the Central Business District (CBD) as the county government intensifies efforts to keep the city clean.
This comes after new, large-capacity dustbins were installed across the CBD, aimed at improving waste management and promoting a cleaner environment.
In a statement shared by Nairobi County’s Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria on Saturday, June 7, 2025, on his X account, he warned that anyone caught dumping garbage irresponsibly in the CBD would face legal consequences.
He noted that while the county has provided dustbins in strategic locations, many people still choose to throw their waste carelessly.
Mosiria said that this bad habit is now being dealt with firmly, and county officers will be on the ground to monitor the situation and arrest those found violating environmental laws.
The city official also made it clear that the Nairobi City County Government is fully committed to environmental conservation and public health. He stated that the government will uphold strict guidelines to ensure the city remains clean and dignified. Those caught urinating in public, engaging in illegal dumping, or breaking any environmental laws will be prosecuted.
“We have installed dustbins across Nairobi’s CBD. If you are caught littering or dumping garbage in the CBD, you will face the full force of the law. Unfortunately, many people have developed a bad habit of carelessly disposing of their waste without considering where it should go; they simply drop it all over town.
“We will be actively monitoring the area and taking necessary action against offenders,” Mosiria stated.
Vandalism
The warning comes just days after a new dustbin was vandalised in the CBD. The incident happened on Monday, June 2, 2025. A young man was caught in the act of destroying one of the recently installed dustbins. Members of the public who witnessed the incident acted quickly by alerting county authorities.

In a follow-up statement, Mosiria confirmed that the suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in court. He thanked Nairobians for their swift action and urged the public to continue watching over public resources and reporting any acts of vandalism.
“Last night, I was called to the scene where a young man had vandalised one of our newly installed dustbins in the CBD. Together with our county environment officers, we swiftly responded and arrested the suspect, who was caught in the act by vigilant and responsible citizens. He is now set to be arraigned in court,” Mosiria stated.
The environment chief said the county was serious about protecting public property. He explained that the new dustbins are part of a broader plan to create a cleaner, more organised, and eco-friendly Nairobi.
He emphasised the importance of protecting these investments, not just for the current population, but for future generations as well.
“The installation of these dustbins across the city is part of our ongoing efforts to maintain a clean, organised, and sustainable Nairobi. These public utilities are vital, and we must ensure they are protected for both current and future generations,” he added.
