Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP), Peter Salasya, has issued a compelling call to his fellow legislators, urging them to place the interests of Kenyans above party loyalty as the nation anticipates the parliamentary debate on the Finance Bill 2025.

In a statement shared via his official X account on Thursday night, June 5, 2025, Salasya emphasised the necessity for leaders to act with courage and integrity, especially when confronted with legislation that could worsen the financial burdens of already struggling Kenyans.

He highlighted the importance of questioning, resisting, and defending the populace against policies that may not serve their best interests.

“To my fellow MPs and every institution entrusted with Kenya’s future, when presented with a bill, the #FinanceBill2025 is here for that matter, or a proposal that adds weight to the backs of already struggling wanjiku,” Salasya urged.

“We should not remain silent out of fear or blind loyalty to the boss. We have to. Question. Resist. Defend the people.”

National debt

The vocal MP also expressed concern over Kenya’s escalating national debt and the increasing financial strain on citizens due to high taxes and the rising cost of living.

He emphasised that Kenyans are voicing their distress and called for leaders who will actively advocate for their welfare, rather than remain silent. Salasya urged his fellow legislators to act with courage and integrity, especially when confronted with legislation that could worsen the financial burdens of already struggling Kenyans.

“Our national debt is skyrocketing. I have travelled the country and I can attest to that. Kenyans are crying out under the weight of taxes and the high cost of living. Kenyans don’t need silent politicians; they need courageous leaders who fight for them,” he added.

Salasya to Judiciary

The youthful parliamentarian further called on the judiciary to uphold the law with integrity and without fear. He emphasised that parliamentarians should serve as the voice of the people, not merely endorse decisions without scrutiny.

“To the Judiciary, uphold the law with integrity, not fear. As parliamentarians, we are the voice of the people, not a rubber stamp,” Salasya said.

Salasya went on to also urge the executive to manage public resources with transparency, ensuring they benefit all citizens rather than a select few, noting that while power dynamics and political loyalties may shift, the principles of truth, justice, and dedicated service to the people should remain unwavering.

“To the Executive, manage public resources transparently, for the benefit of all, not for the enrichment of a few. Learn from others. Power shifts. Loyalties change. But truth, justice, and service to the people must remain constant. Kenya must come first, always,” he added.
