Police officers have arrested two persons linked to a robbery with violence incident and recovered a firearm with at least 20 rounds of ammunition.

In a statement on Thursday, June 5, 2025, the National Polise Service (NPS) revealed that their officers were alerted after a Kenya Police Reservist (KPR) reported gunshots at Mungania shopping centre.

Police also disclosed that a person of interest in the incident was challenged by officers from nearby police stations, and that he took off briefly before being nabbed hiding in a nearby residence.

Police alerted

“On June 4, 2025, at around 2030 hours, a National Police Reservist (NPR) reported hearing gunshots at Mungania Shopping Centre in Meru. The reservist spotted an armed suspect carrying an AK-47 rifle, who dropped the weapon and fled on foot after being challenged,” NPS stated.

NPS equally noted that officers responding to the gunshots also detained a motor vehicle believed to have been used by the individuals in the robbery incident. Inside the vehicle, a female occupant was arrested and two mobile phones confiscated.

“Officers from Kathare, Subuiga, and Buuri East Police Stations responded swiftly. Upon arrival, they found an abandoned motor vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects. “A second suspect was arrested shortly afterwards while hiding in a nearby residence. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had robbed a shop attendant in the area, who sustained minor injuries during the incident,” the statement reads.

“Both suspects are now in police custody, awaiting arraignment in court. The recovered firearm and the abandoned vehicle have been secured for further forensic and investigative procedures.”

The arrest comes just hours after three people were detained in connection to highway robberies along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on June 4, 2025.

“In a bid to curb cases of highway robberies along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, detectives in Voi have apprehended three individuals believed to be the masterminds behind these crimes.

“The trio, identified as David Karanja, Juma Jumamosi, and Josephine Nthamba Mutie, were arrested following a brazen robbery that occurred on April 9, 2025,” police stated.
