The rumors emerged after a May 23 -year newspaper notification, which listed 57 prisoners who were given mercy.
Among those forgiven is Joseph Irungu Maina, whose name is closely similar to Jowie, causing confusion and rumors.
Did William Ruto forgave Jowie?
Some agencies have reported that Jowie was among those given the President’s mercy, using section 133 of the Kenyan Constitution, which gives the President the authority to grant forgiveness or reduce penalties for convicted people.
This ability, which is usually used for advice from the Mercy Power Advisory Committee (POMAC), can take several forms, such as complete exemption, judgmental reduction, and conditional or unconditional issuance.
The exemption process involves detailed verification, including comments from the courts, the Prison Authority, the victims, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure justice and equality.
Jowie Irungu is not forgiven
To eliminate the confusion, Dennis Itumbi, head of the creative economy and special projects at the Presidential Executive Office, publicly stated through Twitter’s message that Joseph Irungu Kuria (Jowie) was not included in the exemption list.
Joseph Irungu, named as a prisoner number 22 in the Government Gazette, was found guilty in 2015, which is very different from Jowie’s judgment, issued on March 2024 alone. This confirmed that the released prisoner was a different person.
Jowie Irungu continues to be barred
Jowie was sentenced to death by Supreme Court Judge Grace Nzioka on March 13, 2024, following the conviction of the murder of Monica Kimani in September 2018.
The ruling was supported by much evidence, including unlawful possession of weapons and intentionally committing crimes.
The death of his father Jowie Irungu
As previously reported, Julius Irungu Mwangi, Jowie’s father, passed away at the age of 64 on Saturday, June 15, 2024, after a long illness.
His illness became worse following the death of his son, Jowie Irungu, for the murder of Monica Kimani.
Irungu’s widow, Annastacia Thaama, confirmed that she died at a hospital Nakuru Level 5 Annex.
Family members have asked that Jowie be allowed to attend his father’s funeral, even if under police protection.
The family rejects the death sentence
In a similar statement published in TUKO.co.ke, Jowie’s family criticized the death sentence issued to the murder of Monica Kimani.

Speaking outside the courtroom on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, Jowie’s mother maintained her son’s innocence and called the decision wrong.
The family plans to appeal against the Supreme Court’s decision issued by Judge Grace Nzioka.
Confirming that justice would happen, the mother reiterated that Jowie was innocent.
Jowie’s attorney’s team accused the judge of making a decision fueled by public pressure.
