Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has expressed his deep sorrow and unwavering commitment to justice following the tragic death of Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett, the parish priest of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
Speaking during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Senator Cherargei extended his condolences and emphasised the necessity of accountability, stating that those responsible for the heinous act should be apprehended and brought to justice.
The vocal senator also expressed his hope for the restoration of peace in Kerio Valley.
“We shall not rest until the killers of Fr Allois Cheruiyot Bett, parish priest of St Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, Elgeyo Marakwet County, are apprehended and taken to court; that is when justice shall be done,” Cherargei stated.
“I want to assure the people of Nandi and the family that I will not sit until justice is done, and I hope peace will return in Kerio Valley.”
Father Bett’s death
Cherargei’s calls come after the National Police Service (NPS) disclosed that they launched a manhunt immediately after the incident, which led to the arrest of six suspects now in custody.
In addition, the police said that the preliminary investigations ruled out that Father Beth’s killing was not linked to cattle rustling or banditry.
According to the police, Father Bett, who was based at St Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, was accosted and fatally shot shortly after concluding a Jumuiya (small Christian community) mass in Kakbiken village.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, May 22, 2025, in Kabartile Village, Mokoro Location, Kerio Valley, within Elgeyo Marakwet County.
“The National Police Service (NPS) regrets to confirm the tragic shooting of Reverend Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish. The incident occurred in Mokoro Location, Kakiptul Sub-Location, Kabartile Village. General Service Unit officers responded swiftly and established that Father Bett was accosted and fatally shot by armed assailants,” the National Police Service statement reads in part.
“A manhunt was immediately launched, and six suspects have since been arrested and are currently in custody. Preliminary investigation indicates that the incident is not in any way related to cattle rustling or banditry.”

The authorities also extended their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett, as well as the parishioners of St Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, and appealed to local communities to remain calm, go about their daily activities without fear, and cooperate with the police.
