Government Hints At Adding Recently Renovated Stadium to 2027 AFCON Line Up

The Government has given the biggest hint that another stadium could be included to host the 2027 AFCON.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has hinted that Kinoru Stadium could be included in the list of venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The recently renovated facility is expected to be part of the historic biennial championship which Kenya will co-host alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

The 20,000-seater facility in Meru County may join the elite stadiums earmarked for the continental assignment if the planned upgrade is completed on time according to Sports CS Salim Mvurya.

The stalled project is expected to compliment the main stadia of the AFCON 2027 showpiece.

“All is not lost for the works we have agreed to do in upgrading the stadium to host international matches. And being that AFCON is in 2027, I am certain that with good renovations done to the stadium, we will be able to include it as one of the hosting venues,” Mvuyra told Mozzart Sports.

The ministry is expected to open the tendering process next month in order to beat the August deadline.

“Since the president gave orders to hand over completed works by August, we will do tendering in June to have the approved works completed by the set deadline,” Mvurya said
