The weather department warns about strong winds and big waves in 15 counties this weekend

The Ministry of Environment has issued a weather alert following a warning from the Kenya Climate Department (KMD) on the bad weather that will hit several parts of the country from May 23.

The alert, issued on Thursday, May 22, warns residents of at least 15 counties to prepare for moderate to large -scale winds and large waves.

These conditions, which are likely to occur at 33% and 66%, can cause risk as structural damage and disrupt marine activities.

Which counties will be affected by strong winds and waves?

Effective counties are Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.

In these areas, strong winds from the south over 30 nodes (15.4 meters per second) are expected to start on Friday, May 23, especially on the coast, the lower southeast, and northwestern Kenya.

KMD has also predicted that wind speed will increase on weekends, exceeding 35 nodes (18.0 meters per second) on Saturday and Sunday, before decreasing to 25 nodes (12.9 meters per second) by Monday, May 26.

Coastal water is expected to have longer waves over two meters during this period, expected to slow down to two meters by Monday.

The department advised residents and marine operators to be careful as this strong wind can cause the roofs of the house to be cleared and the damage to buildings in several areas.

Additionally, large waves can significantly reduce the ability to see and be harmful to fishing and marine transport activities on the Indian Ocean coast.

Along with the warning of wind and waves, the five -day KMD forecast from May 20 to 24 shows the continuity of rainfall in various areas.

Which counties will witness the rain this week?

Heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the East and west plains of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria, the Rift Valley, the Coast, and northwestern Kenya.
