Why is the X network turned off in Tanzania?
The incident occurred just days after the president ordered police to strengthen security on social networks, highlighting the importance of protecting national interests in the digital sphere.
In early May, Tanzania removed more than 80,000 websites, social network accounts, blogs and other online platforms in what was considered the largest suppression of digital content in the history of the country.
Although the government emphasized a move aimed at protecting the mental well -being of children, it also focused on the growing direction of strict online control.
Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sport, Hamis Mwijuma, told Parliament that the Tanzania Communications Authority (TCRA) has announced 80,171 platforms by distributing non -moral content that threatens children’s mental health.
Mwijuma said this in response to a question by the Special Assembly Member of Parliament in Kamani about the Government’s strategy to control the content of social networks.
This great implementation was part of the broader efforts of the Government that had been developed over the past decade.
In 2017, Tanzania enacted the principles of electronic and postal communications (online contents), which were further amended by 2020.
These laws forbid content that seems to be inappropriate, filthy, hateful, or that can disturb public peace.
Inc them can be imprisoned up to 12 months, fined Tsh 5 million (approximately KSh 238,860), or both. The regulations gave TCRA greater authority to monitor and control social networks, including blogs and personal user accounts.
