The first daughter of the late Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, Gynsen Were, has delivered a glowing tribute to her late father.
Speaking during the requiem mass of the late MP at the Consolata Shrine in Westlands on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, Gynsen said that it was disheartening to see her first birthday without her father.
“I always felt I could take away the pain you felt, Dad. In death, I love you still. No one could ever fill the place you left in my heart. I wish you were here to celebrate with me my birthday, and as I continue to grow into a better person,” Gynsen stated.
“This is my first birthday without my dad. This was always my biggest fear. Who will call me ‘daughter’ or msichana wangu? I don’t know how I will live without you, Dad,” she said.
Dream car
Gynsen equally promised to fulfil the promise she made to her dad of acquiring their dream car.
“You went before I could achieve anything in life, but don’t worry, I will buy the Mercedes you always wanted. Although the door between worlds is closed and we are apart until the time God opens it, you will always be in my heart, Daddy.”

The mass was attended by dozens of legislators across the political divide, including Governor Johnson Sakaja of Nairobi, Simba Arati of Kisii and Gladys Wanga of Homa Bay.
Other leaders present were the Cabinet Secretary of Energy and Petroleum, Opiyo Wandayi, National Assembly speaker, Moses Wetang’ula, Majority whip in the National Assembly, Sylvanus Osoro, Belgut MP, Nelson Koech and Senate Majority leader, Aaron Cheruiyot, among other leaders.
Funeral arrangements
In the solemn mass ahead of a planned airlifting of the body to Kabunde Airstrip in Homa Bay on Thursday, May 8, 2025, leaders called for a speedy investigation into the manner in which the MP was killed in his vehicle on April 30, 2025.
While acknowledging that the investigative agencies were working to unmask the killers, they challenged them to reveal the actual killers of the legislator, noting that those arraigned were hired assassins.
“All we want is justice for our dad. I know there are four suspects who were apprehended, but we not only want the people who did it, we also want to know the people who sponsored it; the people behind the scenes calling the shots,” Were’s son Boyd remarked.
