Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has vowed to make an example of the perpetrators in the death of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.
Speaking during a Jukwaa La Usalama tour in Meru, where the MP spent a significant period of his adult life, Murkomen stated that Were’s death was shocking and that he was confident that all those involved in it would be brought to book.
“My condolences to the family of Honourable Charles Were; the incident is shocking in the circumstances in which the MP was killed, the manner in which he was killed despite him having security and having expressed concerns about his safety,” Murkomen observed.
Significant progress
“Luckily, it is within my knowledge that we have made very significant progress in arresting the perpetrators and their collaborators; and it will shock you to note that this is a very heinous crime that was done in a very cavalier manner; involving people that ordinarily should have taken good care of the interests of the MP.”

The Interior CS equally indicated that more arrests will follow even as the deceased is interred at his rural home in Kasipul Constituency on Friday, May 9, 2025.
“We want to assure that the government of Kenya is committed to ensure that those perpetrators who have been arrested and their collaborators, who will be arrested any time soon, will be brought to book, and their punishment and discipline will be an example to anyone who thinks that they can run away from the law,” Murkomen warned.
“The manner in which the police were able to pick those who were involved is a signal that anyone who is trying to harm another Kenyan, we have the tools and abilities to arrest them. Despite the criticism, our police officers are foiling various crimes in a day.”
More people arrested
The remarks come at a time when police recovered two pistols believed to have been used in the killing of Ong’ondo Were on April 30, 2025, along Ngong Road.
Also, the officers managed to arrest two persons of interest in the case and recover several rounds of ammunition and clothing that is believed to be consistent with those of a suspect captured trailing the late MP on the fateful day.
“Following the previous updates from the National Police Service regarding the tragic shooting of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, we would like to provide the public with the latest information on the investigation’s progress. Two additional suspects have been arrested: Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, also known as Abdul Rashid, and Dennis Sewe Munyasi,” DCI’s John Marete stated.
A bag and footwear matching the description of those worn by one of the suspects at the scene of the incident were also recovered. All items have been submitted for forensic examination.
