Berihu Aregawi Dominates Men’s 5000m With Meeting Record at Diamond League Meeting in Shanghai

Berihu Aregawi stole the show, leading an Ethiopian 1-2-3 in the men’s 5000m at the Diamond League Meeting in Shanghai.

Berihu Aregawi was in a class of his own as he obliterated a strong field to take the crown in the men’s 5000m at the Diamond League Meeting in Shanghai.

The Ethiopian crossed the finish line in a time of 12:50.45 ahead of fellow Ethiopians, Kuma Girma and Mezgebu Sime who clocked 12:50.69 and 12:51.86 to finish second and third respectively.

Ethiopia’s Kuma Gurma was in the lead as the athletes passed the 400m mark, with Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir coming in second passing the mark.

Cornelius Kemboi was running closely behind them as Berihu Aregawi also in the mix running among the athletes in the first group. Uganda’s Kenneth Kiprop was also running in the first group looking very comfortable.

Passing the 1000m mark, the athletes were also looking very comfortable with Kuma Gurma still in the lead, running closely behind the pace makers.

Berihu Aregawi was also in the first group, looking very comfortable running with the Kenyans and Ethiopians and there was no sign of him taking over until the final laps of the race.

With the pace makers now dropped, the race became an Ethiopian affair with Mezgebu Sime also joining the chart as a top conender, but he had been running in the leading group.
