He expressed frustration at the appointment of former North Mbeere MP Geoffrey Ruku to lead the Ministry of Public Service and Hannah Cheptumo as the new secretary of the Gender Cabinet.

Why did Khalwale surprise the selection of Ruku, Cheptumo?

Speaking during the Senate activities on Thursday, April 17, Khalwale questioned the potential of the newly appointed secretaries, suggesting they have no qualifications for such high responsibilities.

Carrying Ruku and Cheptumo, Khalwale said Ruku “struggled” during the interview to hand over the public service, while Cheptumo, despite being a colleague, “has no ministerial qualifications.”

He also criticized Cheptumo for previous remarks involving women’s deaths in short -term homes and their claims for money, and referred to the view as a leader.

“I saw Ruku during his interview-he tried very hard. Then they appointed another, Cheptumo. You heard the coming minister of the Gender Cabinet tell the whole country that girls were dying in short rooms because they were hungry for money,” Khalwale said.

The senator also touched on the issue of the dismissal of former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwambasaying he played a major role in reviving the sports industry in Kenya.

He praised him for removing the FIFA ban from FKF, reviving high school football, and launching a talent stadium project.

“The Talent Sports Stadium was the source of Ababu Nimwamba, I wonder how the decision was made to get rid of Ababu, who was performing and then bringing people like Ruku,” he added.

Did Khalwale accuse Ruto of treating the Luhya?

Khalwale’s recent criticism of Ruto’s nomination comes just days after accusing the country’s head of excluding the Luhya community.

Speaking at his home in the village, Khalwale expressed his concern about what he referred to as apathy in western Kenya, citing stuck infrastructure projects, damaged factories, and poor road networks as evidence of unfulfilled commitments.

He condemned the recent White House meeting for failing to address important development issues in the region, including hospital improvement, youth employment, and road investment.

Khalwale called on the President to raise the Kakamega Referral Hospital to the national status, similar to the Jaramogi Oginga Oginga Oginga Odinga Hospital of Nyanza.

The senator went on to claim that the community promised 30 percent of government shares instead handed over to the ODM leader’s allies Raila Odinga.

He warned Ruto that continuing to ignore the area could cost him politically, saying the Luhya vote should not be taken easily.
