Joseph Opama said that his problems started after he finished his previous prison term, where a man came to him with a promise of KSh 80,000 if he killed his wife.

Speaking to Inooro TV, the prisoner said he had to accept the job due to his financial problems, saying the money would help him start over.

“The man knew that I was a former prisoner, so he asked me if I could accept the job of being a hired killer. He told me he would pay me KSh 80,000, and I needed that money to start my life because I had finished my sentence,” he remembered.

Opama claimed that the man informed him that his wife would be alone on Sunday and that would be the right time to attack and kill her.

“That day, Sunday, I went to the woman's house and killed her. When he saw me forcefully enter his house, he was so shocked that he could not speak,” he said, adding that the man and his wife had disagreed about their property.

She said she had been paid a deposit of KSh 20,000, but the man who hired her demanded to follow her everywhere for the remaining payment even after committing the heinous crime.

How Opama was arrested

He says he was never paid the balance of KSh 60,000.

“I was arrested because I was caught with the phone and the ID of the dead woman. I took it so that I could withdraw money from M-Money his. I did not disclose to the police that I was rented because I wanted the man to bring me the rest of my money,” he added.

He was remanded in custody in 2021 and sentenced to 40 years in prison. His imprisonment will end in 2050.

“I have appealed and given this information, but the volunteer lawyer told me it was too late. I hope I get another chance or at least a reduced sentence because the man used me. I am very sorry for taking that woman's life. I thought about how I left my family without a mother and I am very sorry for my action,” he said.
