Gerald Mwangi: Super Metro Denies Allegations of Misappropriation of Workers' Funeral Funds

Gerald Mwangi, popularly known as Makanga Bae, sadly passed away from multiple organ failure after an accident on Waiyaki Road.

His funeral was held on Wednesday, October 23, amid allegations that the company he worked for, Super Metro, misused the funds collected for his funeral expenses.

Responding to the claims, the chairman of Super Metro, Nelson Mwangi, issued a statement stressing that all donations were handed over directly to the Mwangi family.

“We want to clarify that Gerald Mwangi's mother, aunt, and uncle came to our office and received the company's donation directly. Therefore, any other group formed to collect funds for the funeral is not related to Super Metro. Although we appreciate the efforts of all who came forward to help the bereaved, we want to ensure the transparency of these donations,” read part of the statement.

He noted that they will investigate the matter to understand what happened and ensure that their employees get the respect and recognition they deserve.

Why is Super Metro accused of misuse of money?

Michael Muturi, the company's general manager, in an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, denied the allegations of misuse of funds, saying he acted responsibly by distributing the collected funds to Mwangi's wife and paying the hospital bill.

According to Muturi, the family did not realize it relationship four years old of the two and tried to claim ownership of the money.

“I approved the money donated – KSh 63,000 by our employees to his wife. How can the family claim they were not married after being together for four years? Obviously they just wanted money. We took care of everything, including paying the hospital bill, and the remaining amount will also go to his wife,” he said.

How did Gerald Mwangi's wife respond to the allegations?

Meanwhile, the widow, who asked not to be named, distanced herself from the allegations of misappropriation of funds made by the family.

He explained that he received KSh 63,000 before the funeral, but Mwangi's mother demanded the entire amount of money, which he handed over to her.

“In our meetings in Makongeni, Muturi made sure that every money was accounted for before finishing the meetings. I know for sure that Muturi and the treasurer paid the rest of the bill because I was there when they paid about KSh 212,000. I received KSh 63,000 which I returned to his mother,” he said.

The widow, despite being fired after bury her husbandsaid that he felt “bad for the shame they caused at his funeral because he was a peaceful man”.
