Nairobi – Former vice president Rigathi Gachagua has joined Kenyans in condemning the attack on Vihiga senator Godfrey Osotsi.
Osotsi was attacked by suspected thugs at Java House in the county Poisonous Wednesday, April 8, a few minutes after 12 pm.
Gachagua issued a strong statement, condemning the incident, saying that acts of political violence and lawlessness have no place in a democratic society.
The former vice president said the 2010 Constitution provides freedom of movement and peaceful assembly regardless of political ideology.
“Acts of political violence, threats, and violations of the law, regardless of who is the target, have no place in our democracy. They are just old-fashioned. Kenya is a constitutional democracy guided by the rule of law. Every leader has the right to walk freely, assemble peacefully, and express his opinion without fear. These rights are guaranteed by our constitution,” Gachagua said.
According to Gachagua, the attack on Osotsi is among the many recent incidents of intimidation aimed at leaders who oppose the Union of Kenya First.
“The disturbing incidents reported in Kisumu are not isolated. In recent weeks, we have seen various leaders who oppose this government being attacked and threatened. Such actions are intended to intimidate and silence the political opposition. This is an attack on democracy and an act of cowardice,” he said.
The leader of the Democratic Party for the People (DCP) called on the National Police Service to take strict action against the suspects who attacked the Vihiga senator.
“Although these allegations remain matters of investigation, they indicate a worrying trend of increasing political intolerance that must be dealt with decisively. I call on the National Police Service to immediately launch a thorough investigation into the attack on Senator Otsotsi and other related incidents in Kisumu and its environs,” he added.
Gachagua wondered why the President’s rule William Ruto you were scaring opponents if you fulfilled his agenda for Kenyans.
“For our political opponents, politics is a game of influence. If you have really fulfilled the agenda you promised the people of Kenya, why should you be afraid of those who have different views?” he asked.
