James’ case touched many Kenyans for the first time last year after his father was attacked and killed by thugs while he was escorting him to school. The little boy witnessed the horrific incident, leaving him deeply traumatized, prompting Sonko to step in and take on the responsibility of raising him.

Recently, the situation suddenly changed after Sonko accused some of the boy’s relatives of betrayal.
In a series of posts on social media, the former governor claimed that the relative who hired him following requests from the family during the funeral had turned on him.
The man, identified as Araka, reportedly began accusing Sonko of illegally adopting the child.
Sonko claimed that the dispute started after he allegedly caught Araka stealing and reporting to work drunk.
Following the dispute, Araka reportedly demanded that James be returned to his family in Kisii, a move Sonko opposed.
As the conflict escalated, James himself rejected the idea of leaving Sonko, begging the man to stop interfering in his new life.

Did Sonko compromise with James’ family?
In a new development, the boy’s grandfather, Jason Ombui, visited Sonko along with James’ former teacher from Mathare in an effort to clear up the situation.
During the meeting, Ombui distanced the entire family from the accusations and actions linked to Araka, stressing that they fully supported Sonko’s decision to take the boy.

He explained that the family was satisfied with the way Sonko took care of James and was eager to ensure that the child continued to enjoy a stable life.
“The family agrees that Sonko can stay with this child. We were shocked to see reports claiming that we wanted him to return. We want the child to stay with Sonko and have a good life because his parents are not there,” Ombui said.
In an auspicious moment, Sonko invited James to meet his grandfather, their first meeting since his father’s funeral.
Although the little boy didn’t immediately recognize Ombui or his former teacher, the meeting was filled with warm hugs and a calm and reconciliatory atmosphere.
Sonko confirmed that they had accepted the family’s apology and reached mutual understanding in the future.
“After a good meeting where they also met Baby James, we accepted their apology and agreed to give the family full opportunity to see the child whenever they want to visit him. We thank God for leading us to unity and understanding. The child remains safe, loved, and well cared for,” Sonko said.
He also assured the family that he would arrange regular visits to Kisii, ensuring James maintains a connection with his origins. The meeting ended with Sonko even sending his grandfather James money, marking the end of the conflict.
