The Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has denied the allegations made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during his speech.

However, in a statement, the DCI said the claims made by Gachagua about the funds found and evidence in the ongoing investigation into the irregular purchase of oil cargo by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum are not based on facts or evidence, and seem aimed at undermining public confidence in the institution of law enforcement.

The DCI said that all the evidence and information related to the matter are handled professionally and in accordance with the service rules and laws of Kenya.

“The claims made against the DCI in Rigathi Gachagua’s speech are false, baseless and malicious. The claims he made about the funds obtained and the evidence related to the ongoing investigation into the unusual purchase of oil cargo by the Ministry of Energy and Fuel are not based on any truth or evidence and are clearly aimed at undermining public confidence in an important national law enforcement institution,” said the DCI.

“Any evidence, evidence or information that has reached the DCI in relation to this matter is handled with care and professionalism as stipulated in the service rules and laws of Kenya,” the DCI said on Sunday, April 5.

While accusing Gachagua of political pressure, the DCI promised not to be swayed by political statements or attacks from any leader.

“DCI remains a professional, independent and impartial institution, guided only by the law, the Constitution and high standards of integrity. No amount of political statements or attacks will distract us from our constitutional responsibility to investigate serious crimes and protect justice for all Kenyans,” read the statement.

The DCI said it is investigating Gachagua’s remarks, including those made in the Gikuyu language, to determine whether they violate the National Unity and Integration Act or sections of the Penal Code that deal with hate speech, ethnic insult or incitement.

“Furthermore, the DCI continues to review in detail all the statements made by Mr. Rigathi Gachagua, especially those made in the Gikuyu language. We are investigating whether some of these statements may be wrong under the National Unity and Integration Act. The DCI will not hesitate to take appropriate action where the law has been violated, regardless of the status or position of anyone,” they added.
