Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) and his family announced his death on Monday, March 30.

What caused the death of former MP Selemani Bungara?

The veteran politician died while receiving treatment at the EMS Hospital in Dar es Salaam.

“He had diabetes for a long time. About two years ago, his kidneys started to have problems and finally stopped working. The treatment was dialysis or a kidney transplant. The kidney was the biggest problem even when his condition was bad. So he was going to dialysis three times a week. Before he died, he went to undergo dialysis at the EMS hospital but once he arrived, his condition deteriorated,” He said God has tried.

Bwege was a Member of Parliament for Kilwa South State in 2010 to 2020. In his leadership, he continued to be fair and brave and stood firm to defend the interests of Tanzanians.

In Parliament he served in several committees including Agriculture, Livestock and Water between 2010 and 2013; HIV and AIDS issues from 2013 to 2015; and Community Development and Services.

“Throughout the period of his leadership, Hon. Bwege distinguished himself as a defender of justice, always ready to denounce evil in public without fear or hesitation, his patriotism and loyalty to the people of Kilwa and Lindi Region was never in doubt,” added the party.

What is the origin of the ‘where did you hear that’ meme?

In 2020, the member of parliament became very famous after an interview where he denied allegations that he had joined the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

In his response to the press he posed, “Where did you hear that?” which simply translates to “Where did you hear that from?” The phrase quickly spread, becoming a popular meme in Kenya, and has been widely used on online platforms and on products.

Despite his popularity, Bungara lost his parliamentary seat in the October 2020 General Election after running under ACT Wazalendo.

Bwege later joined CHADEMA in February 2026, and the party had planned to receive him officially in front of the public after the start of public meetings.

However, the influential politician died before the party’s plans were implemented.

“We thank God for the gift of Bwege’s life and his contribution to the nation. Indeed, we belong to God and to him we will return,” the party added.

His death caused a stir in social media, with many remembering him for his humor in parliament and his outgoing communication style.

Bwege will be buried on Tuesday, March 31, Kilwa Kivinje, according to Islamic teachings.

What caused the death of the MP of Ol Kalou?

Elsewhere, Ol Kalou Member of Parliament David Njuguna Kiaraho died while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

His family said he had been receiving treatment both locally and abroad but did not reveal the specific illness he was battling.

The Jubilee Party Member of Parliament served in the Department of Transport, Public Works, and Housing Committee and the Parliamentary Rules and Procedures Committee.
