Robert Alai Accuses ODM of Allowing Winnie Odinga to Speak During the NDC Congress

  • Robert Alai criticized the Orange Democratic Movement for allowing Winnie Odinga to speak at the National Delegates Congress (NDC)
  • Winnie Odinga wants a new, inclusive ODM that empowers the youth and decentralises power
  • Alai defended the party’s rightful ownership, challenging ODM’s view of it as a family legacy

Nairobi – Kileleshwa Ward Representative in the County Assembly (MCA), Robbert Alai, has strongly criticized the Orange Democratic Movement’s decision to give him Winnie Odinga opportunity to address the National Delegates Congress special.

The member of the East African Legislative Assembly is among the leaders who spoke at the ODM event held at Jamhuri Grounds on Friday, March 27.

In her speech, Winnie Odinga demanded several changes within the party, which is currently facing internal conflicts following the death of the party’s founding leader, Raila Odinga.

Winnie demanded a new ODM, a party that opens doors for people instead of closing certain groups.

“The stories I tell reflect the struggles of millions of people in this country. When we talk about the new ODM we want, we want a party that opens doors instead of closing them. We want a leadership that listens to our arguments and takes action according to our ideas. We want youth participation not to end only at public meetings. We want to be involved, and let our voices help shape decisions and negotiations. We want power to be decentralized, by empowering the branches and lower levels. We want to improve youth unity into a platform where young people can participate in creating and to share policies. We want to hold our leaders accountable,” said Winnie.

However, in a social media message on Monday, March 30, Robbert Alai suggested that Raila Odinga’s daughter should not be given the opportunity to speak at the National Delegates Congress.

According to Alai, some people consider ODM as a family legacy, whereas it is a party owned equally by members and funded by all Kenyans.

“Why was she speaking in the NDC specifically? Because she is the daughter of Father Raila Odinga or because what position does she have? Look here, ODM is not part of the family heritage. ODM is a political party owned equally by members and funded by all Kenyans,” said Alai.

The outspoken MCA insisted that anyone who thinks Raila’s family should be given priority within the party is wrong and has no respect for other members.

“Anyone who believes that Raila’s family should be given priority within the party is deceiving themselves and has no respect for all other members. The party must follow the law. We loved and miss Baba, but he inspired us to be better,” he added.
