Two years in power, rifts grew between the two, eventually becoming irreparable and leading to Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2024.
Following his removal, the former deputy president launched a fierce attack against Ruto, accusing him of betraying Mount Kenya by allowing the charges to continue, and he has continued these attacks until now.
Speaking to his supporters in Kirinyaga on Saturday, March 28, Gachagua vowed to ensure that Ruto does not get any help from Mount Kenya.
He criticized the president for describing him as a toxic ethnic group, noting that he supported the president regardless of being from a different ethnic group.
“When we supported you, we knew you were a Kalenjin, and you are not a Kikuyu. Now you are insulting our community, calling us tribes. I want to tell you William Kipchirchir Ruto, I Gachagua, from my home here in Kirinyaga, as a descendant of Mau Mau, that if you get even 5% of the votes from this area, then I will not be a man,” he said.
At the same time, even as he exerts influence in Mount Kenya, Gachagua seeks to unite with other regional leaders to strengthen their numbers against Ruto.
The DCP leader currently belongs to the United Opposition, which, among others, is the leader of Wiper Kalonzo MusyokaEugene Wamalwa of DAP-K, Martha Karua of PLP and Fred Matiang’i of Jubilee Party.

However, the headlines of the groups are about who will be the candidate for the presidential flag.
Several weeks ago, Gachagua urged Kalonzo to guarantee the opposition at least four million votes from Ukambani if he is considered the candidate of the coalition.
He acknowledged Kalonzo’s strong leadership qualities but insisted that these qualities alone are not enough in their mission to oust Ruto.
He insisted that Kalonzo’s rule in Ukambani politics is undisputed, but he insisted that the former vice president must expand the number of voters in the area, as their combined strength will be important in opposing Ruto.
Gachagua described Ukambani voters as very reliable, noting that they always follow Kalonzo’s political direction even when he is not at the polls.
He urged them to register in large numbers, targeting at least four million voters, which he believes will be important in shaping Kenya’s future.
Gachagua further explained that Kalonzo’s clean record, free from corruption and scandal, makes him a credible candidate, but he still has to prove to his opponents that he can produce the numbers needed to get the ticket.

He insisted that only by submitting four million votes will Kalonzo be taken seriously as a suitable candidate.
The same standard, Gachagua explained, will be used for all candidates. He mentioned that figures like Matia ng’i, Wamalwa, Natembeya, and Karua will also need to demonstrate their electoral strength before being considered.
Positioning himself as a heavyweight in the opposition camp, Gachagua claimed to get six million votes from Mount Kenya. He claimed that contributions from other chiefs would be added to his tally to ensure victory against Ruto.
He challenged Ukambani voters to support Kalonzo and register in large numbers, warning that without at least four million votes, Kalonzo’s candidacy would not have the necessary weight.
