The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has shortlisted five candidates for the position of Supreme Court judge in Kenya.

The JSC published an advertisement for one vacancy in the Office of a Judge of the High Court of Kenya on January 28, 2026, inviting qualified candidates to apply.
How many people applied for a job as a Supreme Court judge?
In a notice published in Kenyan newspapers on Friday, March 27, the secretary of the commission, Winfridah Mokaya, revealed that the advertisement attracted six applicants.
The JSC secretary said out of six applicants, five were shortlisted after meeting the minimum requirements for the lucrative position.

“At the end of the advertisement on February 17, 2026, a total of six applications were received. The JSC after reviewing the applications for completeness and following the requirements as specified in the advertisement, shortlisted five candidates for the position of judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya,” Mokaya said.
The position remained vacant after the death of Judge Ibrahim Mohammed.

What was JSC’s request to Kenyans?
The commission invited citizens to submit, in writing, any relevant information about any of the listed candidates.
The information should be submitted to the JSC secretary, SLP 40048-00100, Nairobi.
Alternatively, Kenyans can submit information via email: recruitment@jsc.go.ke.
“Please be aware that any member of the public who has provided information about any of the shortlisted applicants may be interviewed by the commission; this information will be kept confidential. As an equal opportunity employer, the Judicial Services Commission selects candidates based on merit from the largest pool of qualified applicants through fair and transparent competition,” it added.
Who are the new judges of the Court of Appeal?
Elsewhere, President William Ruto officially appointed 15 judges to the Court of Appeal of Kenya on Tuesday, January 27.
The Judicial Services Commission conducted interviews and made recommendations before the judges were appointed.
Katwa Kigen, the president’s longtime lawyer, and fourteen other people were appointed.
