Tuju was rushed to the hospital shortly before he was brought to court in Kibera Court for allegedly giving false information that unknown people were following him, causing him to go into hiding.
According to his family and lawyers, the police mistreated the former Cabinet minister during his sudden arrest, injuring his back.
They said that Tuju has been a patient recovering from a serious road accident he was involved in three years ago.
Speaking after visiting him, the leader of the Wiper Patriotic Front, Kalonzo Musyokasaid that Tuju did not deserve to be mistreated by the police.
The opposition leader confirmed his support for Tuju by escorting him to the police station, standing with him in court, and visiting him in the hospital.
He said his defense of Tuju was a matter of basic humanity, decency, and legal responsibility, stressing their commitment to ensuring justice for Tuju.
He criticized the government for ordering the police to protect him in the ICU, saying that Tuju was not a terrorist and was only fighting for his property.
“Raphael Tuju is not a terrorist. He did not deserve to end up in the ICU. What happened to him was police brutality, plain and simple. Why should we put three policemen here with taxpayers’ money? We thank the doctor here for feeding the sick. Tuju cannot run away from his property that he has been fighting for. If President William Ruto is a true friend, let him order the police to leave here. It will be a good sign,” he said.
Earlier, Kalonzo said that Tuju’s high-risk blood sugar required immediate treatment, according to doctors.
Meanwhile, Tuju was released after High Court judge Martin Muyu declared his case urgent and ordered his release on KSh 200,000 initial bail with one surety or an equivalent amount of cash bail.

This was after his lawyer, George Ndege, tried to prevent his arrest and continued detention, saying that the ongoing police presence and control over him at Karen Hospital is brutal, unjust, and violates his rights to dignity, freedom, and medical care.
The case will be mentioned on April 7, 2026, for further instructions.
