Clare was attacked in Kibera on her way home by a man who allegedly had a contract with her ex-boyfriend, Elvis Opiyo.
Although he is still in critical condition at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), some Kenyans have blamed the Sabato singer for the attack.
Did Millie Odhiambo warn against spreading unverified information?
On Wednesday, March 25, Odhiambo expressed concern about the growing trend in Kenya where victims are usually blamed in cases of violence.
“Here are some examples: Someone is killed, and immediately after, a negative, drawn-out story is forcefully pushed on social media to justify the murder. Of course he’s dead, and we can’t hear back from him.
Another person is brutally beaten. An unconfirmed story appears on social media justifying the beating. He is in no mood to give his side of the story. All this is often done by criminals hoping it will affect the justice process,” he wrote.
Echoing the famous writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the MP warned against the dangers of a single story.
Several Kenyans online have been claiming that Opiyo tutored Clare throughout her secondary and university education.
Did Elvis Opiyo pay Mary Clare’s tuition?
They argued that Opiyo did not deserve to be betrayed by his lover of 24 years, due to his sacrifice.
“In the recent case of Claire, who knows for sure that the person allegedly behind the attack paid her tuition? Yet we all share and retell the story with the authority and conviction of a man with a gut,” he said.

He said that a family source told him that Opiyo “did not pay him his fee.”
Noting that the sick Clare cannot confirm the allegations, Odhiambo warned Kenyans against using false information to justify the attack that disfigured Clare.
“Unfortunately, he has no chance to speak and confirm or confirm this… Violence is wrong, it is not,” he stressed.
Millie Odhiambo calls for more security in Clare
Furthermore, the MP suggested that Clare’s security be beefed up, citing concerns from victims’ relatives.
“The madman may just want to go ahead and kill him with a hired hand. A family/friend source tells me one or two incidents surrounding him in recent days have worried them,” Odhiambo wrote.
The MP also warned Clare attacker Lucas Ochieng’ to be careful, implying he could be the next victim and a false story emerges after his death.
At the same time, the two suspects were arrested while the investigation into the deadly attack continues.
Will Elvis Opiyo face a life sentence?
In related news, attorney Danstan Omari He condemned the violent attack and shared knowledge about the consequences of such illegal actions.
According to Article 234 of the Penal Code, any person who unlawfully causes serious harm to any person is guilty of a serious offense and is liable to life imprisonment.
He said that Opiyo may be charged with causing grievous hurt or attempting to kill. Omari urged men to respect women’s rejection and refrain from violence.
