Kiambu: A woman has tragically lost her life following an accident involving a car transporting miraa.

The accident happened on the night of Tuesday, March 24, near the Ruiru Bypass along the Road Thikawhere the car hit the woman before being hit again by another car.

The accident caused a traffic jam after residents blocked the road with stones until the area was cleared.

According to a video circulated online, several people gathered at the scene and surrounded the victim before he was taken away.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, despite leaving the family of the deceased and a section of Kenyans deeply saddened.

How many people died in road accidents in 2026?

The accident has increased the number of serious road accidents that caused deaths and injuries since January 2026.

Speaking at a public conference at Kabati Police Station, NTSA officer Njeri Kuria urged motorists to be careful and follow road safety rules.

“These numbers are not something to be proud of. Last year, we lost more than 5,000 people. This year alone, we have lost more than 1,100 people. I ask you to be careful on the road,” he said.

He noted that Murang’a and Kiambu have been severely affected and called for immediate measures to be taken to reduce the cases.

2 university students died in an accident

Elsewhere, two former student leaders of the Co-operative University, Elvis Echesa and Adonai Munialo, were killed in a tragic accident near an affordable housing construction site in Karen along Co-operative Road.

It is said that their vehicle hit a curb, lost control, and rolled over the site.

They died on the spot, while four others who were inside escaped with minor injuries and were rushed to the hospital Ongata Rongai and Mbagathi, where they were treated and discharged.

The school sympathized with the family and friends of the deceased who will be buried this week.

Ruto noted that two lanes of traffic on Thika Road are experiencing heavy traffic due to the increase in people and traffic, especially between GSU and Museum Hill.

To deal with the congestion, the president announced the construction of a new expressway from Thika Road to Museum Hill, similar to the JKIA-Nairobi highway.
