Clare, a pastor’s daughter, was attacked in public by a man who claimed she was sent by her ex-boyfriend, Elvis Opiyo. He is said to have confessed this when a crowd of people confronted him, demanding to know the reason and the person behind the deadly attack.
The suspect is said to have been close to the scene, with CCTV footage capturing him at the health center where Clare was rushed before being transferred to KNH.
Speaking from her hospital bed on Tuesday, March 24, Clare informed her Mike Sonkothe former governor of Nairobi who announced his case of assault, that he lost the ability to see in one eye during the attack.
He also confirmed that Opiyo is working with the National Intelligence Service (NIS), but Sonko said that the raid does not justify any harm to human beings.
Has Elvis Opiyo been arrested?
A few hours after the case became known, Sonko coordinated the arrest of Opiyo at the Famous Cafe inside the hospital.
The governor, with the help of Clare’s brother and friend, convinced Opiyo to return to Nairobi from Homa Bay, lying to him that the victim wanted to talk to him.
On arrival, Sonko contacted police officers from Upper Hill and Kibera OCS to proceed to the restaurant and arrest him.
Opiyo was then arrested on Sunday, March 22, before being brought to court. He will be detained for five days while the investigation into the serious assault case continues.
Meanwhile, investigators also revealed that Opiyo had attacked his ex-girlfriend for reasons that are yet to be confirmed.
Makachero found that Clare reported a case of assault on November 25, 2025, but no arrests or investigations were made.
What should couples in troubled relationships do?
As the case continues to cause mixed feelings among Kenyans, police officer Sammy Ondimu urged couples to prioritize reconciliation and seek counseling when they are at odds with each other to prevent the escalation of their conflicts.

He also stressed that nothing justifies an attack and urged those in troubled relationships to leave.
Furthermore, Ondimu warned police officers against using their guns in cases of treason, noting that they could end up losing peace or facing punishment.
He said that violence is inhumane, and no Kenyan or family should have to endure Clare’s experience, regardless of the sacrifices of their loved ones.
