EACC Arrested Nakuru Water Officer, They Found KSh 100,000 in Socks

Employee of the Fresh Water and Wastewater Company Nakuru (NAWASCO) has been investigated after he was arrested in an anti-corruption operation that uncovered money hidden in unusual places.

In a statement, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) said Leonard Cheruiyot Mutai, a leak detection officer, was arrested on Monday, March 23.

His arrest by EACC officers followed a complaint from a person in Langa Langa area, Nakuru.

According to the commission, the complainant had reported that the official demanded a bribe of KSh 15,000 to facilitate the replacement of the seized water meter.

The allegations prompted a swift response from investigators, who conducted an operation that led to Mutai’s arrest while allegedly receiving the money.

During the arrest, investigators recovered KSh 15,000, believed to be bribe money.

“Acting on the complaint, EACC conducted an operation that led to the arrest of the suspect while accepting the bribe. During the arrest, EACC investigators recovered KES 15,000,” EACC reported.

Where did EACC find the most hidden money?

Further investigation revealed an additional KSh 100,000 hidden inside the suspect’s socks, as well as KSh 18,000 found in his jacket pocket.

EACC’s discovery of the money, particularly the amount hidden in his socks, has drawn attention to the case.

Mutai was taken to the EACC South Rift Regional Office in Nakuru for processing before being brought to the Central Police Station.

The NAWASCO official was later released on KSh 20,000 cash bail while the investigation into the alleged corruption continues.

“The suspect was taken to the Commission’s South Rift Regional Office, Nakuru, for processing and was later detained at the Central Police Station. He was released on KSh20,000 cash bail pending the completion of investigations. EACC continues to urge the public to report corruption and stand firm against corruption,” the commission added.

EACC noted that the operation was carried out after receiving reliable information from the public, indicating the role of citizens to report in exposing corruption in the country.
