The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) election campaigns in Emurua Dikirr, left vacant by the death of former MP Johana Ng’eno, have entered a serious stage.

Has Naiyanoi Ng’eno withdrawn from the Emurua Dikirr parliamentary race?

In a surprising move, the widow of the late MP, Naiyanoi Ng’eno, has withdrawn from the race after talks with her family, citing personal reasons.

Initially endorsed by the family and considered a front-runner, his withdrawal has caused a major shift among the MP’s staunch supporters.

“Mrs. Ng’eno will not contest as she has been ill and is still recovering from the loss of her husband. Following this situation, we have decided, after extensive consultation as a family, we have decided to release her from the hardships of the campaign,” said family spokesperson David Ngetich, as reported by NTV.

Who can be the MP for Emurua Dikirr after the death of Ng’eno?

Following the widow’s withdrawal, the late MP’s allies met at the weekend and agreed to support Bernard Ngeno, who was Johana Ngeno’s personal assistant, as their co-flag bearer.

Two other candidates, Ezra Sawe and Bernard Rono, reportedly withdrew after a six-hour consultation meeting in the town of Bometand rallying support behind Ngeno.

“Our meeting is the result of a call from the voters who wanted us to put one candidate. Now I am calling on our supporters to do door-to-door campaigns to ensure we give a seat,” Ngeno said.

Chairman of the National Election Board of UDA Anthony Mwaura assured the candidates and residents that the selection exercise will be free and fair.

He stressed that the party does not have a candidate in his favor and encouraged respect for the democratic process.

The by-election is scheduled for May 14 and will be held in 94 polling stations in the constituency, which has 44,447 registered voters.

The election was prompted by a fatal helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno and five others, including a pilot, a journalist, and an officer of the Kenya Forestry Service, in Nandi County on February 28.

Other candidates in the UDA race include businessman David Keter, police officer Kibet Rotich, and accountant Joseph Kiprono Koech.

Keter expressed optimism about his position, saying that he is confident the people of Emurua Dikirr will choose him to succeed the late Ng’eno to complete ongoing projects and start new ones.
