Eugene’s father, David Simiyu, previously claimed that a student called him at 7pm informing him that his son was sick and that they had given him painkillers. However, it wasn’t until ten o’clock in the morning that the school started preparing to take him to the hospital.

The father claimed that he asked them to rush the child to Lugulu Hospital, but the driver insisted that he first needed to pick up the teachers and then take him to the hospital, and if he was not satisfied with that, he would go and pick up his son himself.

The grieving father also claimed that the school driver and the nurse didn’t even help him carry Eugene from their car to his car, and even asked the boy to walk to his father’s car, thinking he was exacerbating the pain.

The father struggled to carry his son alone, and the nurse did not accompany the patient to the hospital to officially hand him over.

How did Eugene’s family respond after his death?

They had just arrived at the hospital when the boy’s mother started shouting saying that he was dying, and shortly after he was declared dead.

Simiyu, in great pain, complained about the delay in taking her son to the hospital and the way she and her son were treated.

He asked important questions such as, what happens to students whose parents are far away or do not have a car or motorcycle to reach school and pick up their children?

After the boy’s death, his family stormed the school demanding accountability and justice for their son.

His sister said that at that time what they wanted to know was what happened to their brother so that they could know what to write in the funeral speech, but the school leadership did not appear.

He claimed that a student told them that the school nurse gave the boy an injection, and then he collapsed.

What did Chesamisi Boys School say?

In its response, the school offered its deepest condolences to Eugene’s family, relatives and friends during this very difficult time.

“The loss of the life of such a young man has greatly affected the entire school community,” said Chesamisi Boys High School.

“We strongly warn against the dissemination of unsubstantiated allegations, including allegations of negligence or the provision of inappropriate medical treatment. Such allegations are misleading, baseless, and may cause unnecessary pain to the grieving family and the school community as a whole,” the school told TUKO.co.ke.

Following the questions raised, the school explained that an official autopsy confirmed that Eugene had a pre-existing medical condition—an enlarged heart—that medically can cause sudden and unpredictable health problems.

“These findings provide important clinical context for this tragic event,” the school said.

“We would also like to clarify that immediately after the incident, the school deliberately chose not to provide detailed information to the public, as we thought it prudent to wait for the official results of the autopsy. This decision was based on the suddenness of the death, and our commitment to ensure that any information provided to the public is accurate, truthful, and based on medical evidence instead of hearsay,” added the school.

The school said that as soon as the student expressed that he was feeling unwell, they took immediate and responsible steps to attend to him and arranged for him to receive emergency treatment.

“Every possible step within the power of the school was taken without delay in an effort to save his life. Chesamisi Boys High School continues to be committed to transparency and responsibility, and we continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities to ensure that all the facts about this incident are made public,” said the school.

“We ask the public to remain calm, avoid rumours, and let the legal proceedings continue. This is the time to show compassion, respect, and dignity to the grieving family,” added the school.

The school stressed that the safety, health, and well-being of its students is its top priority, and will continue to take that responsibility seriously.
