Why William Ruto wants unity in ODM

Among the strategies of the head of state to overcome the opposition is to unite with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) with the aim of inheriting the fortresses that were controlled by the late Raila Odinga.

He has been calling for stability in the party, which is currently struggling with groups that have arisen within.

Since Raila’s death last October, divisions within the party have become clear, with factions pulling in different directions.

The central dispute is whether to support Ruto’s re‑election bid in 2027.

The president, at every opportunity he gets to speak about ODM, stresses that a stronger party would be vital in building a strong government in 2027 and beyond.

Hinting at a coalition with the Orange party ahead of 2027, Ruto said that as Oburu Oginga’s team strategises, he would do the same with UDA to form a formidable alliance.
