Homa Bay – Governor Gladys Wanga has appointed a new deputy governor to replace Oyugi Magwanga, who resigned recently.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 17, Wanga appointed Danish Otieno Onyango to serve as deputy governor of Homa Bay county.

The governor has sent Onyango’s name to the County Assembly for scrutiny and approval before he is sworn in.

“According to the vacancy in the office of the deputy governor of Homa Bay county, following the resignation of the previous holder and in accordance with Section 32, 33C, and 33D of the County Governments Act, I appoint the Danish Otieno Onyanga to serve as the deputy governor of Homa Bay county, subject to the approval of the County Assembly.”

Who is Danish Otieno Onyango?

The governor cited Onyango’s vast experience in public service, spanning more than two decades, as an important factor in his decision.

According to the governor, Onyango has overseen the expansion of Homa Bay’s road network, including the opening of 736 kilometers of new roads in the 2024/25 financial year, as well as routine maintenance of 538 kilometers and the rehabilitation of 116 kilometers of access roads.

Wanga said that the projects have improved the connectivity of schools, health centers, markets and beaches in the county.

“I am confident that he will serve the County to the best of his ability in this new position of DG based on his exemplary performance since 2022,” Wanga said.

He is from Kabondo Kasipul state and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Political Science, and Public Administration from the University of Nairobi, as well as a Master of Arts in Development Studies.
