Bomas of Kenya Tragedy: Workers Protest After More Than 7 Colleagues Die

Nairobi: Workers at the construction site of the Bomas International Convention Complex (BICC) near Lang’ata Road have protested, complaining about the deaths of their colleagues.

The staff did protest Monday, March 16, after their colleague died, bringing the number of dead to more than seven.

Why did BICC workers protest?

According to them, the authorities have ignored their security concerns and failed to listen to their daily complaints.

“One of us died today and he is not the first, we have lost more than seven people here, since this website was opened, people have been injured, some have ended up dead, others also fall, we witness these challenges every day, but we do not know who will answer our problems, no one has ever taken the responsibility to address our challenges. We do not even know the fate of our employee who has usually died,” he said. one adding that they don’t give time to mourn their colleagues.

“Someone dies in the morning, and after an hour, work starts again as if nothing happened. Our question is, who is the voice of the voiceless? We are weak and voiceless. Who speaks for us?”

The workers claimed that the authority threatens immediate dismissal and replacement when they ask about security and pay issues.

They demanded an explanation and justice for those killed or injured at the construction site.

“We want the Chinese leader to guarantee our safety today. This death must be the last,” the workers said.

How will BICC benefit Kenya?

At the same time, the Cabinet approved the construction of the modern Bomas center and positioned it as a leading destination for international events.

Speaking during the Republic Day celebrations, the President William Ruto he said that the website is active 24 hours a day because of the time limit for completion.

“It is being built 24 hours a day because I have set the time to start bringing income to the country. I believe that with the infrastructure we are putting in place and the creativity surrounding our tourism products, we can position Kenya as a perfect destination for business and tourism,” he said.

The national leader added that the project will not only be recognized in the world but will also generate jobs and ensure the country’s economic growth.
