The Weather Forecaster Names Counties Including Nairobi That Will Receive Rain In The Next 24 Hours

The forecast shows a mix of sunshine and rain across the country, with many areas expected to experience periods of sunshine accompanied by occasional showers.

The Kenya Meteorological Department’s advisory comes as the country slowly transitions into the rainy season, with sporadic rains already being recorded in several areas.

Will Nairobi, the Eastern Rift Valley Highlands receive rain?

In its daily weather forecast issued on Friday, March 13, the department indicated that rain is expected in parts of the Eastern Highlands and Western Rift Valley as well as the Southeastern lowlands, between 3 pm on Friday and 3 pm on Saturday, March 14.

The forecast shows that although sunny spells will prevail in most areas, scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely in several counties, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

The weather agency listed Nairobi among the counties that are likely to receive rain during the period under review.

Other counties in the Eastern Highlands of the Rift Valley expected to receive rain include Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia and Nyandarua.

According to the forecast, the area is likely to receive rain and thunder in few places throughout the night.

Rain is also expected in the morning, with more showers and thunderstorms expected in the afternoon.

The weather forecast for Nairobi city shows light rain in the morning, accompanied by periods of sunshine, followed by light rain later in the afternoon.

Temperatures in the capital are expected to reach a high of around 27°C and drop to around 16°C at night.

Which counties in Western Kenya, Rift Valley are expected to receive rain?

The Kenya Meteorological Department also forecast rain in the Western Highlands of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin and the wider Rift Valley region.

Counties expected to receive rain in this area include Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, PoisonousKisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya and Homa Bay.

Others listed are Kericho, Nandi, Bomet, NakuruElgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia and Narok.

Residents in these counties should expect scattered showers and thunderstorms tonight, with additional showers forecast in the morning.

The forecast also indicates that afternoon conditions may bring more rain and thunderstorms in parts of the region.

Cities like Kisii, Kisumu and Kakamega are expected to record rain or light rain in the morning before thunderstorms occur later in the day.

The forecast focuses mainly on rain in the South-eastern lowlands which include Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta and Kajiado.

According to the meteorologist, showers and thunderstorms will occur in some areas tonight, followed by morning showers and more thunderstorms in the afternoon.

For example, Machakos is expected to experience sunny spells in the morning before light rain and thunderstorms occur later in the day.

In the coastal area, light rain is expected in a few places, especially along the South Coast.

Counties such as Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Tana River are expected to receive light rain overnight, followed by additional rain in the morning.

In addition to the rain, the meteorological agency also warned of strong winds in northern parts of Kenya.

Turkana and Marsabit counties are expected to experience strong south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots, equivalent to about 12.5 meters per second.

While parts of northwestern Kenya, including Turkana and Samburu, may also experience scattered showers and thunderstorms, many areas in the northeastern region are likely to remain partly cloudy with sunny spells continuing.

Garissa, Mandera, Wajir and Isiolo are expected to record mostly sunny conditions, with rain falling in only a few places during the morning hours.

What will the weather be like from March to May in Kenya?

In a related development, the IGAD Center for Climate Prediction and Application (ICPAC) predicted that Kenya could experience more than normal rainfall during the long rains of March to May 2026. The outlook, released on January 27 after the 72nd Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum in Nairobi, showed a 45% chance of above average rainfall in central and western Kenya and parts of East Africa.

ICPAC also indicated a 40% chance of near normal rainfall in north-east and south-west Kenya, the coast of TanzaniaSomalia, and parts of South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Uganda.
