Muchai was killed in February 2015, which led to a trial that lasted almost ten years against six suspects who were involved in the murder.
The court heard that Erick Muyera, Raphael Kimani, Mustafa Kimani and Stephen Asitiva conspired against the former MP.
They were found guilty of armed robbery contrary to section 296(2) of the Penal Code.
The court was told that on February 6, 2015, the group was on the side of Waiyaki Way in Nairobi armed with dangerous weapons and they robbed residents of Nairobi and Kiambu a day before killing Muchai along with his bodyguards and assistants.
Milimani Chief Magistrate, Lucas Onyina, ruled that the prosecution proved beyond any doubt that those found guilty committed robbery by force and were in illegal possession of items stolen from Muchai, his assistants and other people.
“On 7 February 2015 at 00:15 at night in Green Belt Estate Street in Wangige area in Kiambu County, in collaboration with others who are not before the court while armed with dangerous weapons including a G3 rifle and a pistol, they robbed Irene Muthoni Wambui of a Huawei mobile phone with IMEI number 866254010865040 worth KSh 15,000 and cash. KSh 600, all with a total value of KSh 15,600, and during the robbery they threatened to use actual force against Irene Muthoni Wambui,” said the judge.
Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina acquitted Margaret Njeri Wachiuri, Jane Wanjiru Kamau (Shiro), and Simon Wambugu Gichamba of theft charges saying the evidence was insufficient.

However, the court ruled that Isabwa and Njeri were in illegal possession of a G3 rifle identified as the weapon used in the murder, along with seven 7.62mm bullets, while Wanjiru was found guilty of possessing two 9mm bullets without a permit.
In addition, Wanjiru’s partner, Kimani Gachii, was found guilty of possessing a Ceska type pistol along with 15 9mm bullets which are believed to have belonged to one of Muchai’s bodyguards.
Simon Wambugu Gichamba, who was arrested after charging a stolen Nokia phone at his workplace, was released after the court ruled that he had nothing to do with the theft.
Records show that the convicted suspects forcibly robbed Michael Gatutu, his wife Jane Njoki Ngatia, his sisters Gladys Waitheira and Irene Muthoni, along with others a few hours before Muchai and his aides were killed while they were buying newspapers around 3 am.
The victims lost cars, phones, laptops, cash, Muchai’s wallet and his bodyguards’ pistols.
Witnesses explained that the attackers forced them into cars, threatened them with guns, and continued to commit robberies one after the other in an orderly fashion.
The judge concluded that the prosecution proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Four armed men hijacked a car, silenced its occupants, and later left them near Zambezi on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway after stealing the car.
The police later tracked down the suspects in Kiambu County and found weapons including a G3 rifle, a pistol with deleted registration numbers, ammunition, and stolen property.
The line of identification linked the suspects to the robbery and murder of Muchai, his driver and two security guards in the early hours of February 7, 2015.
The court noted that the testimony of the witnesses created a clear chain of events linking the suspects to the crime, and that the discovery of the stolen property shortly after the events clearly indicated their involvement.
Sentencing for the six people found guilty is scheduled for March 18, 2026.
