The Public Service Commission has increased the retirement age for lecturers and research scientists to ensure equality and compliance with the law in the public service.

The review will affect lecturers in public universities, research institutes, and similar public service institutions.
Prior to the audit, the mandatory retirement age was 60 years, with Persons Living with Disabilities (WWD) retiring between the ages of 60 and 74 under the East African Community (EAC) convention in 2009.
Why was the retirement age of lecturers exceeded?
The Executive Director of PSC, Paul Famba, said that the decision was reached after consultation with the institutions, noting that

“The mandatory retirement age in public service shall be determined by the Commission of lecturers and research scientists serving in public universities, research institutions, or similar institutions, in consultation with these institutions,” he said, citing Article 70(1)(c) of the Public Service Commission Regulations, 2020.
The letter noted that the PSC said that the low retirement age has led to the loss of skilled workers in their productive years.
The PSC said that early retirement would make them dependent on taxpayers to fund their pensions when they should be contributing to the economy.
The document was addressed to the auditor general, court registrar, government agencies, cabinet secretaries, general secretaries, university councils, and vice chancellors.
What is the new retirement age for Kenyan lecturers?
According to the document, which came into effect immediately, professors and associate professors with permanent and retirement conditions, including research scientists and their associate professors, will retire at the age of 70, except for persons with disabilities, who will retire at the age of 75.
Senior lecturers, lecturers, and research scientists with doctoral and master’s degrees will retire at the age of 65, while those under the disability category will retire at the age of 70.

At the same time, assistant lecturers, junior researchers, graduate assistants, and research assistants under contract employment conditions will retire at the age of 60, while those in the disabled group will be extended to 65 years.
The PSC added that non-teaching staff must retire at the age of 60, while persons with disabilities retire at the age of 65, as stipulated in Rule 70(i)(b) of the Public Service Commission Regulations.
Did PSC advertise job openings?
Elsewhere, the commission announced several job vacancies, including directors of finance and accounts, supply chain management, internal audit, and digital transformation and IT services, and the commission’s deputy secretary for corporate services, organizational structure and labor management, and human resource management.

The commission directed qualified candidates to submit their academic, professional, and legal documents through its website or online recruitment platform by March 31.
The commission warned job seekers against paying any fee for the recruitment process, stressing that the process is free and fair.
