It is alleged that the woman boarded the Buruburu public transport vehicle while accompanying her younger sister to school.

Why was the passenger angry?

According to the witness, he gave the conductor KSh 1,000 as fare and waited for him to be given a tip while the matatu continued its journey towards the city center.

However, when the car arrived in town, the conductor was nowhere to be seen and his balance had not been returned.

The witness claims that the passenger followed the driver to ask him about his money. Instead of resolving the issue, the driver allegedly responded to him with disdain telling him “do what you want.”

A few minutes later, the situation worsened.

Enraged, the woman picked up a large rock and threw it at the car, breaking the windshield before trying to flee the scene.

However, his attempt to escape did not last long, as bystanders and other matatu conductors chased him and arrested him shortly after.

The incident ended abruptly after his arrest.

The incident has been received with different opinions, with some saying they understand why he took that step because the police often do not take action in such cases.

Others criticized him for taking the law into his own hands, insisting that he should have reported the matter to the Sacco under which the trio operates.

Vic Slavor “But he did wrong. Why did you hit the mat, because that’s what you did wrong? Then I also saw when he was caught, he started to be beaten.”

John Andrew Moseti “Anger loss. You can’t break the windshield because of KSh 1,000. What if they give you your money back and tell you to replace the windshield? You will have to add KSh 11,000 to cover the repair.”

The man refused to pass the matatu which was breaking the law

Conflicts between passengers, passers-by and matatu operators are not new in Nairobi’s busy public transport sector.

In February, a driver was forced to reverse his tricycle after getting stuck in a standoff with a pedestrian on a busy pedestrian thoroughfare.

The driver had left the highway and entered the pedestrian lane trying to avoid traffic until he met a person who refused to let him pass.

Many Kenyans supported the man for his courage, saying similar incidents have happened before and sometimes led to strong action from the NTSA, but acts of defiance still persist.
