Nairobi Floods: The Families of the Dead Will Be Promised KSh 200,000 From the Government

On March 6, Nairobi was flooded after heavy rains hit the city causing floods that swept away everything behind them. A total of 24 people were swept away by the flood, and some were seen holding hands as they desperately tried to escape three which would be death traps for them.

Some people who had saloon cars did not luck very much, and in the end, they lost their lives when their cars were flooded due to the bad floods. It was found that a total of 70 cars were washed away by the flood despite the rescuers trying their best.

On March 10, the government waived all mortuary and post-mortem fees for affected families, but by the end of the day, some families were still complaining that they were being asked for cash.

“All families who have lost their loved ones due to the floods should not be charged any money; meanwhile, the processing of funeral expenses has started today,” said Geoffrey Ruku, Cabinet Secretary for Public Services, Human Resource Development and Special Programmes.

Previously, the President William Ruto he ordered the response of various agencies, including KDF, NPS, and Nairobi County, not only to rescue the victims but also to control the crisis.

Additionally, the head of state ordered food to be provided and promised to cover hospital bills for those injured. While doing so, Ruto emphasized long-term solutions and highlighted the Nairobi River Restoration Program to improve drainage and reduce future flood risks.

Sonko promises coffins, transport for the victims’ families

In addition to what the government offers, the former governor of Nairobi Mike Sonko he also intervened to help families who lost loved ones in the flood crisis.

Another story revealed how the terrible floods in Nairobi killed 24 people, and among them were a young hopeful and his boss, Eric Mutua, who had attended a work meeting.

Before his untimely death, the young man had won a prestigious award, and his death affected many people at his workplace and home.

After the floods killed people and damaged many properties, criticism grew about Nairobi’s poor drainage systems as well as the government’s ability to respond after flood warnings.
