Webuye: A woman who survived an accident that killed 6 members of the same family tells what happened

A woman who survived an accident in Kakamega County that killed six members of a family has opened up about the horrific incident.

The tragic accident happened along the Webuye-Kitale road, killing at least 15 people, while about 16 others survived with serious injuries.

The incident, which happened on Monday, March 9, left residents in shock and pain as they tried to come to terms with the sad reality.

Linet Mwanja, one of the survivors of the fatal road accident, narrated the tragedy from her hospital bed while she was slowly recovering.

“My neighbor was at the scene where the first accident had happened. I heard people shouting and I ran there too. When I arrived at the scene, I don’t know where the trailer happened, but it hit us,” he said in pain while holding his injured hand.

The first accident occurred when two motorcycles collided head-on along a busy Webuye road, attracting the attention of local residents.

Residents rushed to the scene trying to save the victims, not knowing that shortly after another disaster would occur.

Shortly after, a trailer that was approaching the area was reported to have lost direction and hit people who had gathered to help.

Webuye County Hospital doctor speaks

The tragic event left many families heartbroken, while several households mourned many relatives and struggled to come to terms with the loss.

Some of the victims came from the same village in the area, adding to the pain in the shaken community.

David Waikina, medical supervisor at the Webuye County Hospital, said there were many casualties, noting that at least 31 people were involved in the accident.

Several victims were already dead when they were brought to the hospital, while five others died from their injuries while receiving treatment at the health facility.

Sixteen survivors sustained injuries and were still receiving medical care as they hoped to recover and return to their normal lives.

Some survivors asked the government to improve road safety along the Webuye-Kitale highway, saying the area is dangerous.

They urged the government to install speed bumps to help reduce the increase in road accidents on the road.

A man loses six siblings in an accident in Webuye

In another case, a man who was visiting his mother recognized six family members who sadly lost their lives in the accident.

Ezekiel Kinusu, a pastor, said he also heard screams and ran to the road where he encountered a tragic incident.

He had already lost a family member when two motorbikes collided earlier, and he lost more relatives when the trailer hit the crowd.

Among the dead were his mother, three siblings, and a neighbor, which left him in great pain.
