According to reports, some of these youths knew that they were going to war and were attracted by the promise of high pay, while others expected jobs as cleaners or drivers but found themselves on the battlefield.
While a few were able to escape and return home, others have been reported dead, while their families are asking for help to bring their bodies back home for burial.
For some of those who had waited for many months and lost hope, a symbolic funeral was held to give them an emotional conclusion.

A cloud of sadness hung in Nyapara’s house as relatives and close friends gathered to say their last goodbyes, even without a body.
Early Tuesday morning, March 10, the family dug a grave as tears flowed among the mourners.
Instead of the body and coffin, they planted a tree in the place that would be the final resting place of their son, after consulting with the elders of Abagusii.

As the tree was placed in the pit, cries and wails filled the air, marking the resting place of their son.
“Instead of him being lost in a distant land like a wild animal, let this tree grow here as a sign to his family and to future generations that Nyapara left something behind,” said the elder of Bomariba village, Samuel Nyabwanga.
Nyapara’s father who was very sad, Samuel Mogesa, described the pain of waiting for three months for a phone call that was never answered, while holding on to the hope of hearing good news.
He said the authorities kept telling him to wait, and weeks later, after losing hope, he decided to hold a symbolic funeral.
“Other families have planted bananas, but we decided to plant a tree as a way to mark his funeral and fulfill the last rites,” said his brother, Vincent Okioma.
