Julia, a resident of Useri Ward in Kilimanjaro, Tanzaniawas seen crying in pain and sorrow, wondering why he should bear the consequences of his son’s mistakes.
His son, Evarest Mrosso, had divorced his wife with whom they had three children. The court had ordered her to pay TZS 90,000 (about KSh 4,480) every month as child support.
However, he failed to implement the decision, which resulted in the sale of his mother’s property to cover the debt.
Why did Evarest Mrosso fail to pay child support?
Mrosso said he could not meet the court’s requirements due to the difficult situation he faced after the breakup of his marriage.
He added that his ex-wife left with all their property as well as the money from selling the land they lived on, which he said was supposed to help raise the children.
“They want TZS 90,000 from me, and now they are selling my mother’s land,” he said.
His grieving mother, Julia Albin, said she has lived on that land all her life, and it is also where her late husband was buried.
“Where will I live now? My late husband gave me this land as my inheritance, and now they are selling it,” he complained.
Residents of the area mourned the 66-year-old woman, saying it seems unfair for the law to punish her for her son’s mistakes.
Some of them even suggested that it would be better to put the young man in prison instead of leaving his mother and grandchildren to suffer.
“I don’t understand why they are doing this to Julia. Mrosso already sold his own land and gave his ex-wife money, and now they are after his mother’s property. Where will he live with his grandchildren? We are asking the government to intervene, he is a widow and cannot be independent,” said one concerned resident.
