The fatal accident happened at about 2pm on Monday, March 9, at Malaha business center, about two kilometers from Webuye town, leaving many families mourning.
Police said at least 16 people sustained serious injuries in the accident and were rushed to Webuye Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
How did the Malaha Junction accident happen?
Webuye police chief Rosemary Odeke explained that the incident started when two motorcycles traveling in different directions collided head on at a busy intersection.
The crash killed both riders instantly and quickly attracted a crowd of residents and motorists who rushed to the scene after hearing the impact.
However, the situation worsened shortly after when a transport trailer traveling on the side of the road lost control while going down a section of the road.
According to Odeke, the truck driver failed to regain control of the vehicle and rammed into the crowd and nearby vehicles.
“Two motorbikes, which were heading in different directions, collided head on resulting in the death of two riders. The accident attracted curious villagers who rushed to the scene. However, they collided after the trailer driver lost control of his vehicle while descending the highway,” Odeke said as reported by the Nation.
Police said the truck hit several motorcycles and cars before hitting the crowd that had gathered at the scene of the accident.
The accident resulted in many deaths and injuries as bystanders were caught in the uncontrolled trailer lane.
“At least 10 people, including two motorcyclists, died on the spot while four others died while being rushed to the Webuye Sub-County Hospital,” Odeke added.
Horrifying images circulating online showed a mangled trailer lying across the road with mangled motorbikes and victims near the scene.
Webuye West parliamentary candidate, Lendrix Waswa, was among the first responders, sending two ambulances to help transport the victims to hospital.
Where were the victims of the Malaha accident taken?
Emergency personnel and residents worked through the night to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage and transport the injured to hospital.
Medical staff at the Webuye Sub-County Hospital treated at least 16 people with serious injuries.
The police confirmed that the bodies of the deceased were transferred to the Webuye Sub-County Hospital mortuary as investigations into the accident began.
The authorities also towed the remains of the trailer involved in the accident to the Webuye weigh bridge for inspection.
At the same time, the trailer driver fled the scene immediately after the accident and remained unidentified while the police launched a search to find him.
Investigators were working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal crash, including whether the truck suffered a mechanical failure or whether the driver lost control due to speeding.
