“The ongoing floods in parts of Nairobi and several other areas of our country have caused great distress to many families, resulting in tragic deaths, displacement of residents, and destruction of homes, property, and livelihoods. I offer my sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are also with all those whose lives have been disrupted by this disaster,” he said.
The President instructed government agencies to coordinate quick responses and increase preparedness to deal with this epidemic.
Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), National Police Service (NPS), Nairobi County Government, National Youth Service (NYS), Nairobi River Commission, and St. John is among the organizations that make up the multi-agency team tasked with dealing with the situation.
“This team will coordinate rescue efforts, support affected communities, and ensure that those at risk are moved to safer areas,” the president said.
At the same time, Ruto ordered the release of relief food from the national reserve to families affected by the floods. He also announced that the government would cover medical bills for those hospitalized due to flood-related injuries.
“I have also ordered that relief food from our national strategic reserve be released immediately and distributed to families affected by the floods. In addition, the Government will pay the hospital bills of those injured or affected by the floods and who are currently receiving treatment in public health facilities. Emergency humanitarian assistance will also be extended to families facing shelter and hardship during this period,” he said.
The President further noted that the floods were a reminder of the need to go through Nairobi’s urban system for a permanent solution to recurring flash floods.
He noted that the ongoing plans for the rehabilitation of the city will continue along with the efforts to help the victims of the current disaster.
“The ongoing Nairobi River Restoration Program remains an important part of our long-term strategy to restore river ecosystems, improve drainage systems, and reduce flood-related risks within the city. These efforts will be strengthened and accelerated as part of our commitment to protect lives, property, and the environment,” he said.
In Nairobi, 3,500 houses have been affected.
Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura He said that the province is supporting displaced families by providing immediate assistance through the Department of Special Programs and partners such as the Kenya Red Cross.
Assistance includes temporary shelters set up in churches, schools, and nearby homes. In addition, the government has instructed all sub-counties to establish public information desks, emergency response centers, and emergency response centers to provide direct assistance.
