It should be noted that the three departures came after the complex visit of the President William Ruto at the church on Sunday, February 22.

The visit caused complaints, mainly because Kiengei had previously vowed not to allow politicians to address his pulpit or accept monetary donations from them.

However, when President Ruto visited the church, Kiengei received KSh 8 million from him cheerfully, while the head of state promised to support him more.

Who left JCM?

Before the president’s visit, JCM’s chief preacher who lives abroad, Pastor Charles Wachira, was the first to announce his departure, citing concerns about the principles of leadership and public participation that he said restless believers, especially amid calls for justice and accountability.

Weeks later, church administrator James Wa Makumbi resigned after serving the church for three years. Although he did not cite specific concerns, he said the move was a personal decision.

A few hours after his departure, Pastor Teddy Greatness of the Nyahururu branch of the JCM also announced his departure, citing personal reasons.

The high-profile departure raised questions among observers about what might be going on behind the scenes at the city’s most famous church.

However, this is not the first time to leave associated with the service. Previously, people who were previously close to Bishop Kiengei have also left the church, some publicly and some quietly.

In this article, TUKO.co.ke looks at some of the former associates of the preacher, including those who previously held leadership positions in the church but later left.

Dama of Spares

City businessman Damaris Muriithi, popularly known as Dama wa Spares, was a close associate of Bishop Kiengei and served as a minister in the JCM.

He was among the early followers who helped the ministry grow during his teenage years.

However, their friendship later broke down after a leaked phone recording went viral in which he allegedly discussed personal matters concerning the preacher and the church.

The result caused a big drama on social networks and eventually made him leave the service.

Brayo Wa Mawe Ndarugo

Brayo wa Mawe Ndarugo was also associated with the Kiengei church before later leaving.

Although his departure caused speculation online, he did not publicly reveal the reasons for his departure. Neither he nor Kiengei discussed the issue in detail.

Modern Pacific Murage

Furniture dealer Murage of Modern Pacific was once considered a close associate of the preacher and appeared regularly at JCM events.

However, he later left the church. Despite his departure, Murage has occasionally been seen attending some of the church’s celebrations as a guest, including the most recent event in 2025.
