Joseph Owino, popularly known as Joe Miles, was more than a man behind the camera. In her 20s, she was an avid storyteller and freelance journalist whose lens captured everyday life across western Kenya.
The phone call Joe received that changed everything
Journalist Sharon Wyendo told TUKO.co.ke that from social events to quiet human moments, Joe believed every story was worth watching.
He came from Nyakach State, specifically Jimo, where neighbors watched him grow from an inquisitive young man to an architect determined to follow his dreams.
On Tuesday, March 3, the dream ended in circumstances that have left his family and friends shaken after Joe reportedly received a call from a man pretending to be a client in need of photography services.
For a freelance photographer, such phones were a normal part of everyday life. Jobs were often done through referrals or last-minute bookings.
A shocking discovery
According to those close to him, Joe left home expecting nothing more than another day at work, another story to record. He never came back.
As the hours passed into the night and his phone went silent, concern began to spread among his family and friends. By the next day, anxiety had turned into panic.
The search for Joe ended in tragedy when his lifeless body was discovered, causing shock in the community and many media outlets there. Poisonous.
Friends and family members who viewed the body described disturbing signs that she may have been brutally attacked.

The dream was interrupted
Some reports claim parts of her body were missing, raising dire questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Near the location where the body was found, items closely related to his craft, including his camera and other photographic equipment, were reportedly found.
For many who knew him, the thought is troubling: the very tools he used to capture life’s moments are now silent, linked to an as-yet-unexplained tragedy.
To his friends and colleagues, Joe Miles was more than just a photographer. He was a young man driven by curiosity and creativity, eager to write stories that would otherwise go untold.
Joe’s family wants answers
His sudden death has left a painful void.
Joe’s family is now asking the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to his death. They want answers and justice.
As tributes pour in from friends, fellow photographers and members of the media community, one haunting question keeps repeating itself:
What exactly happened to Joe Miles after receiving that call on Tuesday?
The body of a Nairobi man was found in Ngong forest
In a similar incident, what started as a frantic search for a missing Nairobi man has ended in tragedy after his body was found along Ngong Road.
Eric Lloyd Ochieng, a resident of Valley Hills on 4th Rise, Kerarapon Drive, left home at about 5pm after receiving a WhatsApp call from an unknown person.
He went out, apparently on his way to meet someone in the neighborhood, and never came back.
