The heavy rains, which started in the early evening, blocked drainage systems in several parts of the capital, causing severe flooding.

Sections of the Mombasa Highway, one of Nairobi’s busiest highways connecting key parts of the Kenyan capital, were among the worst affected.

Videos and photos shared online showed cars struggling to get through flooded areas, with some drivers opting to leave certain lanes altogether due to safety concerns.

In several places, water levels rose enough to ground vehicles, snarling traffic as drivers tried to maneuver through submerged roads.

The Nairobi Expressway toll is waived

Moja Expressway, the company that manages the elevated highway, announced that motorists would access the toll road free of charge for two hours, between 3pm and 5pm, as floods made many major roads impassable.

The decision came as hours of heavy rain left parts of Nairobi struggling with heavy traffic, with cars stuck for hours on flooded roads, especially along the busy A8 corridor, known as Mombasa Road.

In a statement released on Friday night, March 6, the highway operator said the measure was intended to help ease movement and help drivers deal with bad weather.

“Dear motorists, Due to the heavy rains and ongoing flooding along the A8 (Mombasa Road), MOJA is extending the free use of the Nairobi Highway for all motorists from 21:00 to 23:00. In case of any emergency, please call our rescue hotline 0111039888,” read the statement.
