The warning follows an earlier forecast by the Kenya Meteorological Department, which warned that several areas could experience moderate to heavy rain in the coming weeks.

Authorities say rainy conditions can cause flooding in low-lying areas, poor visibility and slippery road surfaces, which increase the risk of road accidents.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has also issued a road safety advisory urging motorists to remain vigilant when traveling during the rainy season.

KeNHA has called on drivers to slow down, maintain a safe following distance and avoid dangerous maneuvers such as overtaking during heavy rain or fog.

Road users have also been warned against attempting to drive through flooded areas, which often hide damaged surfaces or strong currents.

Motorcyclists and cyclists have been advised to wear reflective equipment to improve visibility, while pedestrians are encouraged to keep a safe distance from speeding vehicles during heavy rain.

“Considering this, KeNHA urges all road users to be very careful: slow down and maintain safety after the distance, avoid passing during heavy rain or fog, do not try to drive through flooded areas, motorcyclists and cyclists should wear reflective equipment to be seen, pedestrians should avoid walking near fast moving vehicles during heavy rain,” said the statement.

Will heavy rain disrupt travel plans in Kenya?

Transport officials say heavy rain could also disrupt travel plans, with traffic delays and temporary road closures likely in flood-prone areas.

KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli assured road users that the authority will continue to monitor the situation and respond quickly to the affected areas.

The agency said it will continue to collaborate with other government agencies to ensure highways remain safe and accessible when the rainy season begins.
