His wife, Viona Munai, who was nine months pregnant, was hospitalized, and Okenye returned home promising to visit her the next day.

However, when he returned to the hospital the next morning, he was met with heartbreaking news about his wife and their unborn child.

Viona was brought to the hospital with a toothache

Viona Munai, aged 28, died in a hospital in Kayole following what the family claims was a tooth extraction without their consent. The death also resulted in the loss of her unborn child.

Speaking in pain, Okenye said:

“I took my wife to the hospital on Tuesday, February 24, after she complained of a toothache. I returned home expecting it to be a normal treatment. But the next morning when I returned at five in the morning, I found out that the doctors had already extracted her tooth without my consent or signing any documents. After the extraction of the tooth, her neck started to swell.”

Okenye said he was later informed that his wife had been taken to the operating room (theatre).

He waited for several hours while seeing other patients come in and out.

She claimed that she did not get clear information about her condition and thought that she might be undergoing a cesarean section as she was nine months pregnant.

“Later I was told that the child had died in the womb. He was not undergoing surgery as I thought. I thought that was why they took him to the theater,” he added sadly.

The hospital must respond to the allegations

The family was shocked by how the extraction of a tooth could cause the death of mother and child.

However, the hospital management gave a different explanation than that of the family. One doctor said:

“There were other cases going on in the theater, so we had to wait until one room was free so that he could be taken in for treatment. The goal of taking him to the theater was not to give birth, but to ensure that the airway is safe through intubation.”

However, the family is still not satisfied and wants a thorough investigation to determine the cause of death.
