Captain George Were was among the six people who died in a helicopter crash in Mosop, Nandi County
Speaking at JKIA, Were’s family said he was an experienced pilot who had never been involved in any accident until the tragic Saturday.
The pilot’s brother, Francis Were recounted their last conversation and plans, saying that he was about to retire
The family of Captain George Were, the pilot who was driving the chopper that crashed and killed six people, including Emurua Member of Parliament Dikir Johanna Ng’eno, is mourning his loss.

The Eurocopter 350, with registration number 5Y-DSB, caught fire on Saturday, February 28, in Mosop, Nandi County after Were attempted to make an emergency landing in heavy rain.
Speaking at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Sunday, March 1, his brother, Francis Were, said the family was struggling to comprehend how a normal day at work turned into a sudden tragedy.
He remembered their last conversation on Wednesday the week before, when they looked at each other and made plans to meet at the weekend.
“We were supposed to meet, but unfortunately, that will never happen. This is something we did not expect because in all his career as a pilot, he never had an accident. So this was the first, the last, and the most painful,” said Francis.
When was George Were supposed to retire?
The talented pilot from Nyakach in the County Poisonous he had more than 4,000 flying hours and was due to retire in September 2026, making his death even more tragic.
His cousin, Hesbon Omondi, expressed confidence in his experience, noting the many years he spent flying.
“He has been a fighter pilot with the 50 Air Cavalry for many years since 1985. He was a very experienced pilot,” said Omondi.
Captain Were is survived by his wife and two children, who are still dealing with the tragedy.
