William Ruto Celebrates UDA Winning All Seats In February 26 By-Elections: “We Are OK”

President William Ruto has been surprised by the success of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party in the by-election held on Thursday, February 26.

The party presented candidates in four by-elections, parliamentary by-elections and three for ward representatives.

The UDA contested the Isiolo South MP, Muminji, Evurore and West Kabras MCA by-elections.

In the Isiolo South parliamentary by-election, Mohamed Tubi of UDA won with 7,352 votes, defeating his sister Bina Mohammed, who contested on the Jubilee ticket.

Bina got 634 votes, while Isack Abduba Fayo of the National Economic Development Party finished third with 44 votes.

Electoral Officer Abdi Sheikh announced Tubi as an elected Member of Parliament and presented him with an IEBC certificate.

UDA’s Duncan Muratia also won the Evurore ward race with 7,853 votes, ahead of Kenya Democratic Party’s Albert Muchira, who got 1,940 votes.

In Muminji ward, Peterson Njau won with 3,207 votes, while Boniface Ngari of DEB followed with 2,232 votes.

Meanwhile, UDA’s Elphas Shalakha emerged victorious in the West Kabras ward by-election with 3,317 votes, defeating DCP’s Bramwel Khaemba, who got 2,640 votes.

Speaking about the victory, the president pointed out that it was the beginning of success in the 2027 general election.

He noted that Kenyans still had faith in the UDA party and the functioning of the current administration, despite the strong opposition.

Ruto congratulated the winners while congratulating UDA members across the country for remaining strong.

“Thank you, Isiolo South, West Kabras, Muminji, and Evurore for standing firm with the Democratic Union in yesterday’s by-election. We are on a solid path to building a strong national political party whose vision transcends generations as we move Kenya to the first world. Congratulations Tubi Mohammed (Isiolo South State), Elphas Kainanga Shalakha (West Kabras Ward), Duncan Muratia Nyaga (Evurore Ward) and Peterson Njeru (Evurore Ward) Muminji) for your victory and the faith that people have shown in you,” he said.

The UDA was founded in 2021, and later performed well in the 2022 General Election.

Its founders had withdrawn from the former president’s Jubilee Party Uhuru Kenyatta.

Ruto won the presidency on the UDA ticket.

He intends to use it to defend his seat in 2027.

At the same time, the president is persuading other parties to cooperate with the UDA to increase his chances.

In January 2025, the National Peace Party (ANC) under the Prime Minister Stay Mudavadi broke away and joined the UDA.

Ruto is now eyeing a partnership with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Why does William Ruto want cooperation with ODM?

At the end of last year, the president encouraged the ODM party to organize itself before the vote.

Speaking in Migori during the fifth edition of the Piny Luo Festival, the president stressed that a stronger ODM will be essential in building a strong government.

He hinted at the possibility of an alliance with the party led by Oburu Oginga, noting that as ODM strategizes, he would also strengthen UDA to form a larger political alliance.

In what appeared to be an attempt to woo ODM members, Ruto said that ODM could form the next government as an equal partner with the UDA, adding that the Orange party must organize itself and remain strong, even after the death of its long-time leader. Raila Odingaso that both parties can plan together the leadership and development of the country.
