The Ghost Ambassador? Truphena Muthoni Left Waiting for Orders Months After State House Honor

Months after her high-profile appointment to Kenya’s ambitious environmental mission, the official Ambassador for the 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign, Truphena Muthoni, reveals she is still waiting for her marching orders. Despite the fanfare surrounding her selection by President William Ruto in late 2025, the 22-year-old climate activist claims she has yet to receive a formal briefing on her specific responsibilities.

Muthoni’s appointment on December 15, 2025, followed her record-breaking 72-hour tree-hugging marathon, a symbolic feat that captured national attention and earned her the Head of State Commendation (HSC) medal. However, the transition from activist to official ambassador appears to have hit a bureaucratic snag.

Uncertain Ground for a Green Envoy

During an interview with Ghetto Radio, Muthoni expressed her confusion regarding her current status within the government’s flagship climate program. While she maintains a private office for her foundation in Lang’ata, the official framework for her ambassadorial role remains a mystery.

The government appointed me as the 15 Billion Trees Initiative ambassador. I have my office for Truphena Muthoni Foundation in Lang’ata. The one for the appointed ambassadorial post, I don’t know much about it, but I will speak to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to understand,” Muthoni stated.

She confirmed that no official has reached out to define the scope of her duties or provide a structured work plan. “I don’t understand the duties. No one has approached me to make me understand what my duties are. We haven’t spoken about the role,” she added.

Advocacy Continues Despite the Silence

Despite the lack of official guidance, Muthoni hasn’t stopped her environmental work. She continues to champion tree-growing efforts through her own foundation, proving that her passion for the 15 Billion Trees Initiative transcends her official title.

The initiative itself remains a central pillar of President Ruto’s climate agenda, which seeks to restore 10.6 million hectares of degraded landscapes, increase national tree cover to 30% by the year 2032, and enhance climate resilience through massive reforestation.

Awaiting a Ministry Briefing

Muthoni plans to seek clarity directly from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to bridge the communication gap. Her appointment was intended to accelerate the national campaign by leveraging her influence among the youth and her unique brand of symbolic advocacy.

As the government pushes forward with its “Jaza Miti” strategy, which recently introduced 18 new seed centers to mass-produce drought-resistant seedlings, the integration of its appointed ambassadors will likely be crucial for maintaining public engagement and “emotional ownership” of the project.
