The courageous minister, who was the Member of Parliament for Ugunja and the minority leader in the National Assembly before joining the cabinet, seemed unprepared for the interview.
He often answered in general terms instead of specific answers asked by the reporter.
What issues did Wandayi fail to answer properly?
The incident that worried many Kenyans was when the CS failed to explain what kind of crude oil Kenya is drilling in Turkana County.
“The only thing you can know is that it is a good oil, of good quality. I will invite you to come and see the oil yourself,” said the Minister.
Wandayi also failed to explain what role his ministry plays in Nairobi County following the signing of the cooperation agreement between the central government and the county government.
He could not explain the specific duties that the Ministry of Energy will carry out under the agreement, giving only general information.
“We want to deal only with the issues of street lights and expand the electricity infrastructure in informal streets,” he said.
When confronted by Okwara, he admitted that he had no specifics: “I don’t have (specific information) here. It’s a lot, as you know, Nairobi is big and there are many streets,” he replied.
The CS refused to reveal the estimated costs of the projects that his ministry will implement in Nairobi.

When asked why Kenyans pay the highest electricity prices in Africa, Wandayi said:
“Each country is unique. Different countries have different sources of electricity. Our electricity costs are competitive,” answered Wandayi.
The former Ugunja Member of Parliament also failed to explain why he has been boldly participating in local and national politics contrary to the provisions of Article 77 of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya.
How did Opiyo Wandayi behave during the interview?
During the interview, CS avoided looking directly into Okwara’s eyes for most of the time.
His answers were often short and measured, in stark contrast to his boldness and strong words at public meetings.
Okwara looked somewhat angry, but tried to maintain his composure.
Kenyans watching the interview vented their anger online, asking why the CS was avoiding simple questions.

How did Kenyans respond to Opiyo Wandayi’s interview?
Critics of the Minister questioned his expertise following his disappointing performance during the interview.
Dr. Stephen Obiero: “I am ashamed on behalf of Opiyo Wandayi. He is very humble, he does not look in the eyes, he has no understanding of energy. Indeed Yvonne Okwara sees a deficiency.”
Nelson Havi: “Yvonne Okwara is a weapon of media destruction. Stay away from her camera and microphone if you don’t know. I will not charge any legal fees for this advice.”
Billionaire: “Yvonne Okwara has confirmed that Opiyo Wandayi is another member of the ‘Yes Sir’ team. This person has no statistics or details of the projects he claims to manage. He knows nothing about his ministry, he just says ‘I have no specific details’. This 2027 we need cleanliness.”
WeThePeopleMvt: “I think CS Opiyo Wandayi went to the interview without preparation or he was arrogant. The entire CS does not know the type of oil that is being drilled in Turkana. If we start with CS who is not an expert… that is a red signal.”
Jame: “We have an Energy CS who knows nothing, he says our electricity costs are competitive but he has no data to compare. The answer to the question why Kenya pays more than our neighbors.”
